Choosing the right school is always a difficult choice given the number of options available to us in Hyderabad. Let us try to find some answers to all these questions. We are trying to walk the same path as you are doing to understand the parameters that should be considered to select a school.

Use the following to choose the right school for your child

Past performance of school

Curriculum content and teaching methodology

Learn to understand the content of the course being offered by the school under each education board. Curriculum for CBSE, ICSE, and IB boards are different and tries to cater to various need of the student community. You should also consider your objective when trying to match the right education board and its content.

Meet the counsellors in the school to understand and gain knowledge on the teaching methodology. If your child is entering in the kindergarden then teaching methodology is very important to be considered. Match your child’s learning aptitude with the right form of teaching methodology. Do not shy if there is a mis-match between the two even though the school is a branded and reputed one! Always go with the child pyschology as it is the child that needs to adjust and acommodate the learning and gain the required knowledge and experience in the formative years.

What your child is going to learn is important to know before you take admission in a school. Know the subjects being offered primary language and the second language. Seek out answers on the range of activity or workshops for the subjects.

Try not to compromise on the right content and teaching methodology against the brand of the school.

Non-curricular and Sports

One of the important criteria is to know the range of activities available to the child in the school. Curricular activity is not the only educational development that a parent should seek when picking the school. Ask the range of activities offered by the school in each grade. Activities can include non-curricular like drama, craft, music, dance, story-telling etc. Outdoor and indoor play environment is also important for the children to develop their overall well-being.

Consult the school counsellor to understand their offering of play amenities like playgrounds, equipments, coaching, safety measures, and frequency of engagement. Try to understand the record of the school in local and regional inter-school tournaments for both non-curricular and sports.

How is the school life

School is the second home for the children. Most part of their formative years are spent in learning and understanding the world around them in this abode of education. Visit the schools that you are targeting for your child. Because personal visit will give you the first-hand knowledge on the school environment.

The school should be well-ventilated and optimum space for the children to move around. Classrooms should be ventilated and should have natural light. Seating areas in the classes should be able to accomodate minimum space to move and engage in fun activities. Furniture should be good and with minimum safety standards.

Check the hygiene factors of the school environment including the school’s cleaning staff, house-keeping staff, and bus drivers. Pay a cursory attention on the life of the school transport, it should be not very old. Check for the hygiene within these transport vehicles.

Talking to counsellors is important to get the basic knowledge on the school and its history. But, do not limit your interaction to only with counsellor. If possible, engage with any teaching staff, security, and administration people. This will give you a general sense of the school’s environment, their mood of education service and their commitment.

CBSE Education System

This article tries to provide a brief summary on CBSE. We have attempted to provide much information so that it will be easy for you to understand about CBSE Board of education. This will help you to take decision if you are deciding on CBSE syllabus or curriculum as the education system for your child.

CBSE

Established in the year 1929, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) Board is one of the largest and also one of the oldest board of secondary education in India. There are more than 17,500 schools affiliated to this board in India and another 25 countries.

The vision of the board is to ensure a school education system that is vibrant, robust, and holistic in its approach. It aims to promote intellectual, social and cultural aspects of the learning environment. A continuous and comprehensive evaluation system is the agenda for this holistic system of learning and development.

The CBSE Board is widely recognized by the Indian government. Certificates issued by it hold a better value and accreditation with governments abroad.

CBSE Board Affiliation

The CBSE affiliated schools incorporate an uniform education curriculum that is flexible to suit the
needs of every student. Regardless of the institutions geographical identity, the school and its students
share common academic curriculum, and examination systems. Due to its flexible nature, there are large number of schools both government and private affiliated to CBSE Board.

All Kendriya Vidyalayas, and Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas are affiliated to CBSE Board. These schools cater to the transferable jobs in Central government, state government, and leading PSU’s and Banks. Private employees who take mid-year transfers are too benefited and one of the important segments opting for CBSE affiliated schools. To cater to this growing trend of mid-year transfers, lot of private institutions have started affiliating to this board and offering their education services.

CBSE Curriculum

The CBSE Board prepares syllabus at two levels-  secondary and senior secondary.  The examination is All India Secondary School Examination (AISSE) or 10th Board and All India Senior School Certificate Examination (AISSCE) or 12th Board.

CBSE framework is framed by National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT), the syllabus is very structured, streamlined, predictable and controlled. The board approves both English and Hindi as the medium of instruction. The biggest positive is that all national entrance examinations such as All India Pre Medical Test (AIPMT) for medical and Joint Entrance Examination (IIT-JEE) for professional engineering are modeled as per the board’s senior secondary syllabus. If your child has a reason to aim for national entrances then CBSE education system makes sense as it is more aligned to it. More scholarship and talent exams are available with this board than with others. This may be one undue advantage for the eligible and worthy students from CBSE compared to others.

The CBSE Board is very flexible and allows students from affiliated and non-affiliated schools to appear for the examinations conducted under its aegis. A private student from any non-affiliated school can also appear for CBSE examination. Board certificates are widely accepted in higher education institutes like universities and colleges.

The syllabus is prepared by experts from various fields appointed by NCERT. The subject content is very simple. Primary emphasis is stressed on science and maths with focus on application of knowledge. Compared to other board syllabus, it is less stressful on the child as the course content is not that elaborate. Another advantage of the curriculum is that theoretical and practical concepts in senior secondary are less challenging than other board curriculums and are more aligned towards preparing for the competitive professional examinations.

The CBSE curriculum is designed to be cumulative so that learning is accumulative for a student over the years. The  content of the subject flows in a logical way allowing the student to remember the previous year content. This feature of the syllabus allows the student to strengthen their basics around a subject. But, one of the flaws of this curriculum is that the subject is not detailed and does not have the depth compared to curriculums from other boards. This means that the described textbook by the CBSE is enough to learn the subject. And, it curtails the freedom to learn from other sources. So, one can say it is prescriptive in nature rather than being descriptive!

Reforms in CBSE Curriculum

In the year 2009, the board initiated a revisit to their subjects, content, and teaching methodologies. The outcome was the initiative to launch a grading system away from the marking system. The assessment of the student has been evolving over the years and has now streamlined to account for extra-curricular activities. Leaning towards a changing global education standard, CBSE has removed the marking system that was principally biased towards the subjects and scoring in their examinations. Now, a grading system is introduced that takes into account activities apart from the annual examination. Learning is now inclusive of more application oriented and activity based.

This also brought in a reform to introduce a number of new subjects to quench the knowledge of a student and keep them on par with the changes in the economy. More subjects are launched now giving the students the freedom of choices and opportunities to learn and assimilate knowledge in their senior secondary level. This has proved to a good move as the subjects offered by CBSE are the best and beyond comparison in today’s scenario.

The changes in evaluation ensure that a student is graded in not only studies but also on extra-curricular activities. This is good for the overall personality development of the student as now they will strive to participate in activities other than studies.

CBSE Environment

Most of the transferable jobs in private and public are benefited from this board of education. As it is very structured and streamlined, any transfer of child between school in the middle of their academic year can be less disruptive. The schools are often reputed to have diverse culture as they accommodate wide range of backgrounds. This cosmopolitan atmosphere is very beneficial for the child to learn and assimilate the different cultures of Indian region.
